BONFIRES
People often build a bonfire and then leave it for several days, often without checking before lighting. Hedgehogs love to sleep in leaves, logs and sticks, if they find a bonfire this is the perfect bedroom and would burn when it’s lit.
YOU CAN
- Get an adult to check bonfires thoroughly for hedgehogs before lighting them.
- Offer other homes for hedgehogs so that they can live there instead, put dry leaves or sawdust in it so that it’s snug and warm. You could also make your own permanent log pile so that hedgehogs are less likely to use bonfires to sleep in.

- Light a bonfire without checking it first for hedgehogs, this prevents severe injury and even fatality.
